Shropshire Potato Day

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

The Shropshire Potato Day is an annual event run by Shropshire Organic Gardeners with Potatoes provided by Matthew Smith of Brighter Blooms, based in Walton-Le-Dale near Preston. Matthew has been awarded a Chelsea Gold Medal several times and was awarded The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee award (Best Exhibit in the Great Pavilion) in 2022. Attendees can choose from over 40 varieties of seed potatoes from 20p per tuber. Additionally, there are many varieties of vegetable seeds, onion sets and garlic, fruit trees and soft fruit bushes, dahlias, gladioli, lilies, and other summer flowering bulbs.

Another attraction of the event was a private exhibition of Heirloom potato tubers. The varieties are mostly historic with older ones from the late 18th – early 20th Century. The selection on display was potatoes grown last year in bags on an allotment in West Bromwich by W.K Whitehead.
